Cooling towers are simple in principle that they remove heat from water mainly by means of latent heath loss from evaporation while coming into contact with an airstream. Aside from evaporative cooling water is also cooled by sensible heat transfer due to the temperature difference between air and water. Cooling towers are heat exchangers, but instead of the usual conduction-conversion of shell and tube, or plate heat exchanges, it generates cooling by bringing water and air into contact.
Some common applications include cooling the circulating water used in oil refineries, petrochemical and other chemical plants, thermal power stations, nuclear power stations and HVAC systems for cooling buildings. The classification is based on the type of air induction into the tower: the main types of cooling towers are natural draft and induced draft cooling towers.
Cooling towers vary in size and scope from small roof-top units to very large hyperboloid structures that can be up several hundred meters too and hundreds of meters in diameter, or rectangular structures that can be over forty meter tall and eighty meters long. Hyperboloid cooling towers are often associated with nuclear power plants, although they are also used in some coal-fired plants and to some extent in some large chemical and other industrial plants. Although these large towers are very prominent, the vast majority of the cooling otwers are much smaller, including many units installed on the or near buildings to discharge heat from air conditioning. Cooling towers are also often though to emit smoke or harmful fumes by the general public when in reality the emissions from those towers do not contribute to carbon footprint, and consist solely of water vapor.
McConnell Air Conditioning and Refrigeration is pleased to offer regular cooling tower maintenance service. Keeping a large-scale cooling tower running correctly is vital to overall operations. For instance, correct maintenance can prevent airborne disease. Preventing this in cooling towers is a vital part of protecting the health and safety of employees and visitors in the facility in which the cooling tower operates.
Cooling towers are used in a number of industries and come in a number of configurations. Their required maintenance therefore depends on the type of application for which they have been built.
Complete cooling tower maintenance is a necessity. A dirty tower can affect how the system runs and is can also endanger the health of the people who work, visit or live in the vicinity of a building in which a cooling tower is used. Cooling tower maintenance starts with a complete visual inspection to see if the moving parts and housings are in need of cleaning. Once it has been determined that these areas need to be repaired and cleaned or are in working order, there are five recommended steps to follow to ensure proper cooling tower maintenance, in addition to your cooling tower manufacturer guidelines. The cooling tower maintenance service takes care of these steps.
